******************************************************************** *** SECRET MISSION *** VERSION 1.00 / March 2007 ****************** ******************************************************************** Alain Capt / acapt@acsoft.ch / Switzerland URL: http://www.acsoft.ch FOREWORD -------- I wanted to see, if it was possible, with SHIII Mission Editor, to design a mission with a complete different style of those in the game stock. A mission offering more interactivity and surprises, starting and finishing from an harbor, like a campaign patrol. A mission requiring other tasks than just sail, seek and shoot torperdoes. In fact, it is more or less the kind of patrol I was hoping to get, almost sometimes, in the stock game, during campaign. It will be you to decide if I really succeeded in this entreprise, but I must say, I am not unhappy about the result, despite the great challenge it represented (see after). This mission is dedicated to my very good friend "L'arbre à noix" !!! INSTALLATION ------------ To install, just unzip "SecretMission.zip" into: "SHIII\DATA\SingleMissions\English" or "SHIII\DATA\SingleMissions\German" with the option "Use folder name" activated, if you use an unzip tool like Winzip. If you use the Windows XP unzip wizard, no worries about this option, it is set by default. HOW TO PLAY SECRET MISSION WELL ------------------------------- To succeed, you MUST follow EVERY ORDER TO THE LETTER, like a disciplined German "Kaleun". This start with, the very few indications given into the mission briefing. Normal, the mystery is here ! It is a secret mission ! Unfortunately, interaction controls features offered by SHIII Mission Editor are very poor, Moreover, the very few we get, are very badly designed, when not simply buggy. This is why it was a great challenge to design this adventure. To overcome this, I had to scenarize the story in a way to overturn all these technical restrictions. So normally, if you obey each simple order TO THE LETTER, or when orders require "Kaleun" to take its own action decisions, if you do it in a logical way, you want miss anything and may succeed in the mission. By logical way, I mean for example, if you are ordered to go to some map grid location, you don't go there by starting in the opposite direction and zig-zaging all over the Atlantic, before to go there !!! COMPATIBILITY ------------- This mission is designed for SHIII stock game, but IS COMPATIBLE WITH GFX version 1.02 (tested). I play it with my own SHIII tuning, which include almost all graphics & sounds enhancements of GWX, but NOT the hardcore tunings nor the extension of the SHIII world (more objects, more activities, etc). With my configuration which is totally comparable to stock game, even me, an old SHIII "Kaleun" and moreover, the mission designer, I do not succeed each time. So, I have no idea if with GWX, this mission become litteraly a suicide mission or not. The answer belong to hardcore players ! TECHNICAL IMPORTANT REMARKS --------------------------- Some messages you will receive during the adventure are triggered when your submarine enter into a specified zone. Unfortunately, there is no way to disable the trigger, when you have received the message. Therefore, if you go outside the zone and later, enter into it again, you will receive the same message again. For some messages the date is important. This is why these messages mention a date, which might be not the real date of when you received the message. I have indicated the most probable date, but depending on how goes the mission for you, maybe it will be later. In any cases, use the date mentionned into the message as reference. While testing this adventure, I have remarked that saving & restoring a single mission seem to have problems. You may even not be able to reload a save. Therefore, it is perhap better to play it all in one single session. This should take about 2-3 hours of play. When close from your base Lorient (less that 50km), avoid to use time acceleration greater than 64x. Apparently, SHIII is not able to really "dock" a ship. I have remarked with GWX or while testing this mission not under GWX, that, when you return into your harbor, you can found some catastrophic situation with sunk, damaged or displaced docked ships. Apparently, this occur in case you had big storms during your patrol. This single mission test a design, where the harbor traffic & docked ships are regenerated only when you return. I am not so sure this will totally avoid the problem. But this feature allow also to introduce some changes between departure and arrival, which is good for realism. For this mission, you will probably need to use other application(s) or seek for informations on Internet. Just in case you don't know how to do that, pause the game with the "BACKSPACE" key, then do "ALT-TAB" to minimize SHIII and switch to next available running application or simply to the workbench. Have fun !!! ACSoft Productions Alain Capt March 2007
